More life drawing
It’s been a while since I’ve shared some life drawing sketches! I find that I usually only like a few from each session, but feel very chuffed with the ones I do like. In the 20 minute watercolour sketch above of model Danyon I tried to bring in touches of yellow, blue and red and lean into the translucent and unpredictable watercolour layers.
Twenty minutes sounds like a long time to draw someone, but the time goes so quickly! I like to choose some parts to focus on, and end up leaving the rest of the figure fading away. Sometimes it’s the face that ends up more abstract, but in these sessions with model Billy it was where all my time went. Coloured pencils was a fun experiment when I felt like something different, although not every colour combination I tried really worked.
This model Imogen had the most beautiful hair that had to be the focus every time. Another session where the translucency of the watercolour gives the model a lovely glow.
My usual go to life drawing class, Sticc and Thicc, has moved to Victoria Park! I’ll miss this cosy Osbourne Park studio, but looking forward to more sessions drawing these excellent models. I have been thinking more about the value of learning alongside others, rather than on my own from a YouTube tutorial. There’s always fresh perspectives, different materials and techniques, lively chatter, wine and tea and a bit of advice when you need it. Drawing from life and drawing with others makes this whole artist thing a bit less lonely.
